Prior to using this fire pit surround, it is crucial to line it with steel or apply a fireproof cement coating. 

Internally, it is necessary to create a barrier between the fire and the stone. Options include inserting a steel lining with proper clearance, using fire bricks in the center for heat control, or applying a fire retardant mortar to preserve the stone. 

Additionally, it is recommended to place a layer of sand and gravel at the bottom of the pit for enhanced safety.
